Hat gelegentlich Kommentare erhalten, die dem Buch wegen des Breisacher-Kapitels eine antisemitische Haltung nachsagten – eine Meinung, die irrig sei und die L. offensichtlich nicht teile. »Our time has indeed produced the type of the fascistminded Jew, and a novel, endeavouring to depict this epoch, can hardly avoid its characterization. The jewish manager, on the other hand, strikes me as quite a lovable figure. And in addition, the novel features the highly sympathetic, if somewhat humoristically treated woman Kunigunde Rosenstiel.«
