Werfel selbst scheine die Auffassung zu teilen, dass das Buch keine sehr geglückte Publikation sei. »He has brought much disappointment and resentment upon himself through this book: not only the American liberals rejected it, but also the Catholics, who are not very pleased with his refutation of baptism for the Jews.«
