Betrachtet das Werk nicht als das Beste, das James geschrieben hat. »The looks behind the scenes of the writer’s and artist’s life which he grants the public are often a little to much in keeping with the ideas public anyhow holds of these backgrounds.« Auch würden die Motive sich wiederholen. Ein kleines Meisterwerk von James sei sein früher Kurzroman ›The Turn of the Screw‹. Sagt abschließend: »In any case, I fully agree with you that there is a certain kinship between my own and James‹ artistry and mood of life. Despite all that separates me from him, I still consider James as sort of brother.«
