Äußert sich zu G.’s aufgeworfenen Fragen der Ähnlichkeit zwischen Henry James und ihm: Bekennt, dass er erst vor kurzer Zeit die Bekanntschaft mit James‹ Werk gemacht habe, und zwar mit den Artisten-Geschichten. Las das Buch auf Empfehlung von Charles Jackson, der ihn ebenfalls auf eine Ähnlichkeit mit J. aufmerksam machte. War allerdings nicht stark beeindruckt davon. »I had not read a line by James before, and I cannot say that the artists stories, which I have not perused, made a great impression on me. Perhaps the reason for this can be found in the twice stated similiarity, – and perhaps in the opposite.«
